Shoulder Pain

The shoulder joint is the body's most flexible and complex joint. Three bones, nearly a dozen different muscles, and many ligaments and tendons work together to move the arm in just about any direction. We rely on our shoulders and arms in our daily life, and dealing with shoulder pain can severely limit that!

This pain can be a really detrimental to your general health: hanging up the laundry, taking off a jumper, picking up the kettle to make a cuppa; all become tricky. Shoulder pain can also your ability to get to and stay asleep.

Shoulder pain is a significant factor in reducing participation in recreational actives such as gardening, sports, cycling, driving and playing with your kids and grandchildren.

The most common causes of shoulder pain are bursitis, rotator cuff problems, frozen shoulder, osteoarthritis, instability and movement dysfunction. They can occur for various reasons, such as overuse, injury, post surgery and age-related wear and tear.

The answer to solving the problem of pain comes down to understanding the shoulder’s unique structure, the constant demands we place on it throughout the day, and a variety of risk factors.  The fact is, more than 70% of people will suffer the effects of shoulder pain.  You don’t have to be one of them!

We will help to initiate pain relief and improve function, strength and mobility and provide you with lasting resolutions. We can advise you on the ideal imaging test to diagnose shoulder problems…why you may have increasingly vulnerable to shoulder impingement…and how to bulletproof your shoulders for whatever you challenges you face>

Book an initial one hour consultation with us for only £75 and we will provide you with a working diagnosis and treatment plan. Call or email to get in touch

Sports Injuries

As a physiotherapist specialising in sports injuries and complex trauma, our aim is to bring tips and tricks learnt in professional sports and military environments to help everyone.

We use current scientific evidence to improve diagnosis accuracy and make treatments more effective. If medical imaging or a medical opinion is needed, we will refer you for those.

The goal is to guide you through a comprehensive recovery journey, rehabilitating you to full function.

We have established an environment that creates a bridge between common sense and sports medicine. Areas of interest include tendinopathy, shoulder dysfunction, acute ankle sprain, post-ligament or cartilage reconstruction, return to play, sports rehabilitation and hamstring management.

At TPT we provide detailed and comprehensive assessments and examinations. These are combined with our modern treatment approaches to return you to your injury-free lifestyle.

Don't put off getting an injury looked at by a professional. If you leave treating an injury and continue to try and 'get-by', your muscles in other areas may over-compensate and this has a knock-on effect on your ability to recover quickly.

Make sure you get a timely diagnosis and treatment,  so you can get back to the sport you love!

Feel free to contact us for an initial consultation by phone or email. and in the meantime read more about our sport experience here

Nerve Injury Rehabilitation

At TPT we have extensive experience with traumatic and idiopathic nerve injuries, and nerve disorders. Damage to the peripheral nerve system can result from:

Trauma from motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports or other accidents can stretch, compress, crush or cut nerves.

Medical conditions like diabetes, Guillain-Barre Syndrome and chemotherapy can all affect the nerve’s ability to transmit signals, resulting in neuropathy (which is when nerve damage leads to pain, weakness, numbness or tingling in one or more parts of your body).

Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, Sjogren’s Syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis attack the body’s own cells and can also attacck nerve cells.

Injury can also occur due to chronic nerve entrapment. Nerve entrapment can also have similar signs as peripheral nerve injury. These conditions include carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome and sciatica.

Following an initial consultation including notes on your history and physical assessment, we can diagnose your nerve injury and work out a plan of action. Depending upon these findings; you will be offered a scheme of rehabilitation treatments and/or referred to other healthcare specialists to further investigate your symptoms.

It is important to get nerve pain looked into as it can uncover other underlying issues so do contact us on  07354 471470 or by email on hello@turraphysio.co.uk

As a specialist in MSK disorders we can try to find out what is causing you the pain you are having, in order to have the best chance of correcting it for you. If we think you need help from other medical professionals, then we will refer you onwards.

Book an initial one hour consultation with us for only £75 and we will take a full medical history and notes of your lifestyle and what pain you are getting and we can work from there.

Manual Therapy

Because of our longer appointment times, we have more of an opportunity to provide you with the healing power of touch where appropriate.

Human beings need physical contact. When we receive this touch, our brain responds through emotional centres to enable healing and better recovery from both physical injury and emotional trauma. The goal of manual therapy, and physiotherapy in general, is to help you return to your normal activities without pain and to improve your overall quality of life.

There are several types of manual therapy, each serving a unique purpose and tailored to the patient’s specific needs:

Massage and Mobilization:
This involves rhythmic pushing, pulling, and kneading of muscles to relieve tension, reduce pain, and improve blood circulation.

Manipulation:
This involves quick, often gentle, thrusts to the joints to improve the quality of movement in a joint and reduce pain.

Muscle Energy Techniques (METs):
This is where patients contract their muscles against a controlled counterforce applied by the therapist, in a specific direction and position. This method helps in stretching and lengthening muscle tissue and improving muscle strength.

Myofascial Release:
This involves applying gentle, sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue to eliminate pain and restore motion.

The benefits of manual therapy are extensive and can significantly improve a patient’s quality of life.

Some of the key benefits include:

Pain Reduction:
Manual therapy can help reduce pain by relieving tension and stiffness in the muscles and joints.

Improved Mobility:
It can increase the range of motion by loosening tight tissues and lubricating joints.

Decreased Inflammation:
Techniques used can help reduce soft tissue inflammation and facilitate healing.

Enhanced Performance:
By improving mobility and reducing pain, patients can return to their normal activities or sports more quickly.

Relaxation:
Manual therapy can induce relaxation by reducing muscle tension and decreasing the body’s stress response.

Manual therapy is a valuable tool in physiotherapy that can aid in the treatment and management of various conditions.

With the right approach and a skilled physiotherapist, manual therapy can be a highly effective component of your rehabilitation process. Therapies like this get consistent positive results.

We each have over 20 years of experience and have successfully helped people suffering from repetitive strain injuries (eg Carpal Tunnel, Tennis and Golfers Elbow, Patellar and Achilles tendinopathy, shoulder, ITB, calf and lateral hip pain), unexpected impact /sports injuries such as sprains, dislocations and fractures including those that have been pinned.

We also have experience of upper and lower limb joint replacements, ligament reconstructions, and we have helped relieve persistent complaints like headaches, low back pain, sciatica, thoracic, neck and shoulder pain, and long term conditions such as osteo and rheumatoid arthritis.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) impairments comprise more than 150 different diseases/conditions that affect the system and are characterised by impairments in the muscles, bones, joints and adjacent connective tissues leading to temporary or lifelong limitations in functioning and participation.

MSK conditions can affect joints, bones and tissues. MSK conditions are typically characterised by pain (often persistent) and limitations in mobility and dexterity, reducing people’s ability to work and participate in society. Pain experienced in MSK structures is the most common form of non-cancer pain.

Several musculoskeletal disorders can affect the Joints, including:

Gout: A type of inflammatory arthritis that can cause swelling, stiffness, and pain typically in the lower limbs.

Osteoarthritis: A disease in which the cartilage in the joints breaks down, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Psoriatic arthritis: A type of arthritis that can cause fatigue, pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis: Swelling, pain, and stiffness in the joints that typically occurs in flares and affects the hands, wrists, and feet.

Bursitis: A bursa is a small, fluid-filled sac that minimises friction between the tendons, bones, and joints. Bursitis occurs when there is inflammation of the bursa, which can cause pain and a reduction of mobility in the joints.
